We found one particular gene, which showed the biggest difference. That was surprising and somewhat disappointing. "Professor Widschwendenter told me afterwards, 'We didn’t find any changes in the group taking the placebo (the dummy pill). The supplement group also didn’t show any difference', he went on. The volunteers who were asked to consume a teaspoon of turmeric a day were ingenious about what they added it to, mixing it with warm milk or adding it to yoghurt. Another group were asked to swallow a supplement containing the same amount of turmeric, and a third group were given a placebo, or dummy pill. "We asked one group to consume a teaspoon of turmeric every day for six weeks, ideally mixed in with their food. Then, in true Trust Me, I'm a Doctor style, we divided them into three groups. Prior to the trial, few of our volunteers ate foods containing turmeric on a regular basis. Along with Professor Martin Widschwendter at University College, London, we recruited nearly 100 volunteers from the North East of England to do a novel experiment. "There are studies that show turmeric (particularly the curcumin in turmeric) is beneficial for your mood and in a recent episode of Trust me, I'm a Doctor, we carried out our own mini study on turmeric. You breathe in through your nose to a count of four, hold it for 2, then out through your mouth to a count of 4. Also try to finish your evening meal a couple of hours before bedtime and don’t have a late night snack. There are also useful breathing exercises you can practice to calm your mind and help sleep, such as the 4-2-4. "And make sure you get plenty of early morning light to reset your internal clock and eat a Mediterranean-style diet. In terms of sleep, Dr Mosley says routine - waking and going to bed at the same time each day - is also important. With so many of us stuck indoors I worry that vitamin D levels are not getting the boost they normally would at this time of year." The only supplement we are taking at the moment is vitamin D, which does seem to help immunity. "For that reason, we also love foods like yogurt, sauerkraut, fermented and picked foods, which will all help maintain healthy levels of gut microbiome. We know that having a healthy microbiome can have a positive impact your mood. "Gut health is important too, and there is a proven link between having a healthy microbiome (the microbes that live in your gut) and the brain’s capacity to cope with stress. "Routine is really important for mental health. If you don’t have structure to your day, it’s very easy to get sucked into spending your whole day listening to the news or following the latest developments online, which isn’t healthy. ![]() There are plenty of free apps such as Headspace or Calm, but I've also got some great mindfulness videos on the website too. This is why we eat a Mediterranean-style diet (which has been shown in numerous trials to reduce anxiety and depression) and why we also spend around 15 minutes a day practising mindfulness. "Being at home and worrying about work or health is very stressful. We have a healthy breakfast, something like an omelette, and then I get on my exercise bike and follow the videos of HITT exercises on my website. We do strength building exercises, like press ups and squats, and then 10-15 minutes of mindfulness meditation. Each day, we follow a routine of getting up at around 7am, similar to our pre-lockdown routine. "We are currently half way through self-isolation and Clare is keen to get back to general practice and do her bit. Having said that, now Dan’s better, we’re certainly feeling less anxious as neither of us have displayed any symptoms and we’re both feeling strong and healthy. We were reasonably cautious around the house with Dan, encouraging him to eat his meals separately. "Clare is in her 50s, while I am 63, so we knew that catching the virus could be more serious for us. When the couple learnt that Dan most likely had Covid 19, they were concerned. ![]() Meanwhile, their younger son Dan is living with his parents after returning from Australia and is, in his father's words, "back to his usual, healthy self." He’s waiting to see when he will be starting in either A&E or the Intensive Care Unit." Jack is a doctor working up in Manchester and after a couple of weeks of self-isolating is now back at work. "As you can imagine Clare and I are incredibly relieved. "Thankfully they are now fully recovered, apart from still being unable to smell," he says. Last month, Dr Michael Mosley, creator of the 5:2 Diet, and his GP wife Clare Bailey, revealed their two grown up sons Dan and Jack had suspected coronavirus. ![]()
